The Handmaidens of Death
2011
A play about the lives of female munitions workers in the last months of the first world war.
Written in 1918 by Letchworth author Maude Deuchar (under the pseudonym Herbert Tremaine).
This play is one of many from the wartime period which are now being rediscovered. Andrew Maunder (University of Hertfordshire) is a member of the Everyday Lives in War Engagement Centre and has been spreading the word on these ‘lost’ plays, bringing them to new audiences. For more on this and other ‘lost’ plays see his publication British Theatre and the Great War, 1914 – 1919: New Perspectives (2015)
This production was supported by and made in association with the University of Hertfordshire.
